Did You Know?
Views From The Pews
Anonymous writes about Deacon Jim
Rooney’s homily a few weeks back.
Somehow, my response got lost and
anonymous wrote again.
Anonymous quoted Deacon Jim as telling a family story
in which his sister allegedly asked her father-in-law, after
he had used bigoted language at a Thanksgiving dinner,
“What if your dad was black?” Actually Deacon Jim
quoted his sister, after telling her father-in-law to never
use bigoted language in her presence again, as asking,
“What would you say at the Pearly Gates if you learned
God is black?”
Deacon Jim’s points are as follows.
1.) Bigotry is always wrong. 2.) God is black, white,
yellow, red and whatever other skin colors there are. We
are all God’s children.
Anonymous then asks, “My position on the above
is - why not what if your dad or that person be a Mexican,
Puerto Rican or other race - why always the black
person?”
My answers to that question are as follows.
“Deacon Jim told a story that was part of his personal
history. It was about bigotry to a black person, not to
any other ethnic minority. Furthermore, stories about
bigotry are more often about African American people
because for most of our history they were our largest
minority group and, historically, have been the objects of
the greatest discrimination.”

In preparation for the Advent Season
we will look at the ways in which the
Old Testament tells of the coming
Messiah and how this is fulfilled in the
New Testament.
Our next sessions will start on Thursday,
October 23rd at 7 PM in the Church Meeting
Room. We will once again use a study program
prepared by Fr. Robert Barron with great videos,
questions for reflection and discussion.
Come and join us as we prepare for the King!
