April 12, 2015 Divine Mercy Sunday 2 The Pastoral Center is sponsoring the Views From The Pews J.W. writes, “I think you talked about this before but I don’t remember. Does Lent have 40 days? It seems to me it has more than 40 days.” “Over the course of history, the number of days in Lent has been all over the place. In the first century, Lent was only one day long. Since 1970, Lent officially begins on Ash Wednesday and ends with the Mass of the Lord’s Supper on Holy Thursday. In addition, Sundays are not considered part of Lent. So, at the moment, Lents lasts 38 days. Why, then, do we say Lent lasts 40 days? Well, it’s more of a metaphor than a fact. It’s a symbol of Jesus fasting and praying for 40 days after his Baptism. We Americans are a very literal people; many others are not.” Sandra says, “I think this year’s Easter decorations are very classy. I like them a lot.” “Thanks belong primarily to Deacon Jim Venturella’s wife, Carmelitte, who spearheaded the design and installation of the decorations.” CHICKEN DROP BINGO at Cajun Fest SUNDAY, APRIL 19, 2015 @ 2 P.M. Guess the "SPOT" the Chicken squats in to make his "DROP" and you could WIN BIG! The Lucky Person who "Marks The Chicken's Spot" will win $500.00!! Come watch the Chicken Goooooooo … ONLY 100 SQUARES WILL BE SOLD!! Deborah writes, “I went to all of the Easter Masses. I want you to know all of the homilies were wonderful, beginning with Father Daniel’s on Holy Thursday and ending with the Ragman on Easter. I especially liked your Good Friday homily. Thinking about what Jesus did for us made me think and cry. Thank you for putting so much of yourselves into your homilies.” “From Father Daniel and me, you are very welcome. It is our privilege and joy to preach.” Anonymous writes, “I froze in church. You are keeping the church way too cold.” “Our sacristans and ushers are instructed to keep the church at 68 degrees, the temperature the congregation voted on years ago. However, some overly zealous person set the thermostat at 64 degrees at one of our Masses. That probably was the Mass you attended. I apologize.” Fr. Mike How it works: A board marked with random numbers 1-100, on 4x4 squares, will be laid out in an enclosed area. Corresponding numbers, 1-100 printed on a sign-up sheet will be sold for twenty dollars ($20) each. Square numbers can only be sold once. On April 19th @ 2 pm on VOL Cajun Fest Grounds, a live chicken will be placed on the board to roam freely, and, usually without fail, will “drop” in a short period of time. The square/ number that the “drop” lands on is the winner. House Rules Winner need not be present. The winner is determined by where the first “drop” is located. If the chicken “drops” in an out of bounds area, the Chicken Drop Bingo judge will randomly draw one ticket from all entries for the winning square. If the chicken drops on a line, all squares that share that line will split the prize of $500. If the chicken does not drop in 30 minutes, a number will be pulled. The holder of the corresponding square is declared the winner. Did You Know? The most Catholic state in America is Rhode Island. Forty-four percent of its residents are Catholic. Louisiana is about 26% Catholic. That ranks us tenth. Fr. Mike Squares can be purchased in the Pastoral Center Mon-Fri. 8am-4pm (closed for lunch noon-1pm) Only 23 squares left!!
