Fulton Counties and Atlanta Public Schools ( APS ) all voted to roll their millage rates back , however , due to increased assessed property values , some tax bills will still rise . Earlier this year , Georgia lawmakers passed a measure that could further lower the property taxes Atlanta homeowners pay to support schools . If approved by voters this November , Senate Bill 485 would increase the base homestead exemption for Atlanta Public Schools from $ 30,000 to $ 50,000 until 2021 . Other Georgia Legislature bills that limit assessed values from going up more than 3 % each year , regardless of the actual increase in property values on a home , passed for Alpharetta , Brookhaven , Dunwoody , Milton , Johns
Creek and Roswell , and for Fulton County Schools . Sandy Springs and
Fulton County already have similar provisions . Another measure on the ballot for November , HB 820 , targets the City of Atlanta portion of the tax bill . It would provide a homestead exemption on city taxes that limits assessed values from going up more than 2.6 % each year .
Cobb County homeowners were not as lucky . Facing a $ 30 million deficit due to taxpayer funding the Atlanta Braves new stadium and its ancillary services , Cobb County increased their millage rate from 9.85 mills to 11.55 mills . It was the first increase since 2011 and will cost a homeowner with a $ 200,000 home value approximately $ 340 in additional taxes per year .
