VOICE’s Organizing History Affordable Housing: ? Organized with low-income housing residents to fix 800 fire code violations in Culmore Apartments and numerous health and safety violations in Lafayette/Rt. 1 Apartments in Fairfax Co; to correct housing code violations and secure fair treatment during redevelopment at the Alexandria Bland Public Housing Project; and to win $200,000 to restore bus service to the Arlington Health & Human Service Center from Columbia Pike. ? Launched a major campaign to hold financial institutions accountable for foreclosures, predatory lending, and the broken loan modification system in Prince William County. Dental Care: ? Secured $9 million in the 2010 VA budget to preserve access to dental care for low income adults as well as $300,000 from Alexandria City, Fairfax, and Arlington to expand low-income adult dental services at the Northern Virginia Dental Clinic. Immigration Justice: ? Organized local immigrant residents (Muslim, Latino, African Christian) to press for timely processing of Federal immigration applications (citizenship, naturalization, & asylum) that are backlogged more that 5-9 years and to press Virginia officials to accept Federal immigration documents as proof of residency to obtain a driver’s license. 7 6
