FOUR YEARS RUNNING

The vaping industry has seen some huge successes over the past few months , with Public Health England ’ s seventh review marking another victory for harm reduction . Time and again the science has reinforced vaping as a successful quitting tool , and yet , news of this ground-breaking study barely made the headlines in the mainstream media .
Instead we were treated to an unfounded scare story in The Sun and Daily Mail that suggested that the open vape systems , much loved by vapers the world over , were under threat in the UK . They are not .
It is misinformation and sensationalism in the media that leaves smokers cautious about making the switch to less harmful alternatives , for fear they would be putting themselves more at risk instead of improving their health . This is one of the reasons why vaping rates have levelled off in the UK and , unless urgent action is taken to educate smokers that there are better nicotine alternatives available to them , smokers will still die needlessly early . Thankfully , the UK government has a golden-opportunity to act now and it is one which must not be squandered .
As we report in this issue , the ongoing review of the UK ’ s Tobacco and Related Products Regulations allows us to set our own path on vaping policy for the first time since Brexit . The UKVIA has put together a comprehensive series of reforms it would like the government to adopt – reforms which would ensure the UK remains the world leader when it comes to tobacco harm reduction and which will surely save lives .
It is also great to see UK vape stores back open again and giving a much-needed service to communities across the country . With the enormous success of the government ’ s COVID vaccination program – 43 million doses have been administered at time of writing – I hope we can now have some certainty that vape stores will not have to endure any more disruptive stop-start cycles caused by lockdowns . Finally , our most recent VOXPO Vape Live event coincides with global VApril festivities , making this a month where the industry can really come together to celebrate the live-saving technology of e-cigarettes .
