The United States has a representative democracy, meaning that the people elect officials, or representatives, to make governmental decisions. This system is based off of the Ancient Greeks of Athens, who first established democracy by allowing all free male citizens to vote.
As the Roman Empire's legal system greatly influenced many western legal systems with the Corpus Iuris Civilis, Latin is still used widely by lawyers today as well.
