Why did you decide to take Latin?
At my school, starting in 6th grade, you have the option of taking French, Latin or Spanish. Initially, I wanted to take Spanish, but my parents required that I take Latin. I am so happy that they made that decision!
What inspired you to start your Latina Loquendae events?
At the VA Latin Governor’s school, all students attend a spoken class. Because of this experience, I was inspired to start Latina Loquenda to try to promote spoken Latin around the state and keep in touch with JCL friends.
What have been some challenges you’ve faced in organizing your Latina Loquendae?
Organizing events can be very challenging. First, you have to figure out dates, times and locations that will work for Latinae Loquendae. After that, you have to publicize the event to be sure people show up. These tasks can be challenging, but are always worth it.
What would you tell someone considering taking Latin and joining the JCL?
I would tell someone that they should DEFINITELY take Latin and be active in the JCL. The classics are constantly referenced in everyday life through derivatives, myth, grammar etc., and being able to make those connections allows individuals to see the world in a whole new light. Also, the JCL has some of the nicest and most supportive people in it. It is worth joining the JCL just for the new friends you will make.
What was it like to hear that you won the Spirit of JCL award?
I was very surprised when I heard that I won the Spirit of JCL award. My surprise was soon joined by a wave of emotion. I could not believe that my teachers would recommend me or that I would be a candidate. I am so honored to have received this award, and will remember that moment forever.
