Mr. and Mrs. Linton looked at each other in astonishment, then turned back to the Lord and Lady to accept in earnest.

THESE TREES PLANTED IN THE HONOR OF

MR. AND MRS. THOMAS LINTON

WHO SERVED THEIR NEIGHBORS TO THE END OF THEIR DAYS

P.S. This story is adapted from the myth of Baucis and Philemon, who have been renamed as the Lintons, a name derived from an Old English word meaning “town of trees”. The gods have been replaced by Lord and Lady Oswald, another Old English name coming from the words for “god” and “power”. Westport, County Mayo, Ireland, is home to a mountain that was a holy site in early Celtic mythology.
