Haven't studied enough Latin?  If you're planning on continuing study in Classics, please share what classes you're taking or planning to take this coming year?

MN: I'm taking Latin 307 - Survey of Latin Literature Part 2. The class is going to focus on Silver Age Literature and we'll be translating 85ish of Martial's epigrams, Book 5 of Tacitus' Annales, and the story of Cupid and Psyche from Apuleius' Metamorphoses. I also hope to start some Greek courses in the spring.

CL: I'm taking my first ancient greek class this semester!

MH: I’m taking a Elementary Greek I class, as well as a class called Initiation to Greek Culture, which is (obviously) a class on Greek culture.

SD: I will be taking a Latin Elegy class this semester, studying the works of Ovid, Catullus, and more.

Looking back, is there anything you would have done differently at state and/or national conventions?

SD: I would have started sooner in many ways. I would have reached out to students from other schools at my first two state conventions, I would have started in Certamen as soon as I learned about it (rather than waiting a year), and I would have gone to the National convention after my first state convention rather than waiting until after my second.

MH: Been more outgoing; I wasn’t very good at getting to know random people, so I basically stuck around with people I knew from school. I eventually did become more outgoing, but I still regret that sometimes.

MN: Back when I transitioned from Colorado JCL to Virginia JCL, I was a little moody about going from a club of 100+ people to being a Member-At-Large, so I didn't play VJCL Certamen until I went to the FHS Certamen in January. Now that I know that some of my closest friends in the world are in VJCL, I wish I had gone to Kickoff that year so that I could've met them sooner.

CL: I would've started earlier and gone to more conventions.

Any advice for younger JCLers?

SD: Yes, people will be confused why you are spending your summers celebrating a “dead” language. At your next JCL event, take a few pictures of everyone getting really excited. Or, better yet, take a video of spirit or of the JCL creed or song being recited. Show these pictures/videos to the naysayers, and ask them if they still think Latin is dead.

MH: Bring a water boiler to Conventions and make ramen. It’s great. Also a very healthy meal.
