E corde,

VJCL President

My name is Savannah Thompson but you can call me Savvy. If you know anything about etymology, you can probably guess why I go by the derivative of sapio (to be wise) instead of the word that means “flat, grassy plain”. So, hi! I’m Savvy, your 2019-2020 VJCL President! Since my election in November, I’ve started working on some of my campaign promises. One that I’ve already fulfilled is my promise of helping officers form committees. Thanks to the hard work of our 1st VP, Jack, and the submissions of many VJCLers, we now have a new Membership Committee! For more information on that, you can check out Jack’s article earlier in the Forum. I’ve also aided our 2nd VP, Josh, in preparations to announce applications for the new Spirit and Service Committee. These applications will be coming soon, so keep an eye out for those! I have also started what will be a series of Skype calls, another one of my campaign promises. Our first call was an opportunity for VJCLers to meet the officers and hear about their platforms, in addition to asking questions and offering suggestions on numerous topics. I gained a lot of valuable insight from that call, which I hope will continue in future Skype calls! I’m very much looking forward to our upcoming events: TJ's Certamen in February, and UVA's Classics day!

You can find more information about these events on our website, virginiajcl.org. Additionally, there is one Latina Loquenda coming up on February 7th, which I’m excited about! If you don’t know what Loquenda is, it’s a program where students meet for dinner (at either Choolaah, Noodles and Company, or Midlothian High School; it rotates) and converse in Latin! It’s a great way to practice your spoken Latin and meet new friends-- the website is virginialatinaloquenda.wordpress.com.

Speaking of finding out more information, do you (yes, you!) follow our social media accounts? Fun fact, they exist! They’re where we get a bunch of our information out. Don’t have any social media? Don’t worry, neither do I. :) Some officers have Remind accounts! You can join the Spirit and Service class by texting @vjcls to 81010, and the Virginia Local Secretaries class by texting @va-local to 81010. If you have any questions for me or any officers, our doors are always open! Our emails are all on the VJCL website under the tab “Contact and Links.” If you want to say anything to me (even just, “Hi Savvy! I saw your article in the forum!), feel free to email me at [email protected]. I hope to see you all very soon!

Salvete, amici!
