how to become the

club of the month

next

As Praetor Maxima (1st Vice President) of TJ’s Latin Honor Society, I submitted to VJCL’s Club of the Month contest (COTM) every month of school. Our chapter had a lot of success in this contest, so here are some tips that hopefully can help you expand your club and become the next VJCL COTM.

VJCL COTM: This goes without saying, but submit to VJCL’s COTM! I highly recommend doing this to motivate your chapter to grow and promote your club to the rest of the JCL. Every month, the VJCL sends out a new link to a Google Form on their social media, where you can submit information about your chapter and list out the activities you have done the past month. Don’t worry, the Google Form submission doesn’t have to be super formal! The one VJCL COTM winner is usually announced a few days after the deadline, along with a description and photos of their activities and service projects.

NJCL COTM: If you can, try submitting for the NJCL COTM contest as well! Last year, I submitted to the NJCL February COTM because TJ Latin had a particularly busy month then and TJ ended up winning NJCL’s cumulative February-June COTM this year! NJCL COTM has a similar submission process to VJCL, and you can contact the NJCL 2nd Vice President at vp2@njcl.org. Information about NJCL COTM can be found in this link: https://www.njcl.org/Students/Non-Convention-Contests/Club-of-the-Month. Every month the NJCL 2nd Vice President posts the top three winners, with a description of the events that each of the clubs have done. It’s a great way to showcase your chapter on the national scale!

Photos and Videos: Photos and videos can be submitted to VJCL COTM by emailing 2ndvp@virginiajcl.org. If your club wins, the VJCL 2nd VP will post photos from your submission. TJ Latin’s Artifices (Historians) are usually in charge of compiling photos, and they attend various Latin-related events to take photos. A photo Google folder is then shared with the rest of the TJ Latin officers for easy access. You can also submit photos to VJCL Photo of the Season (POTS), as well as NJCL Photo of the Month (POTM).

• Since people can’t meet up right now, photos might be a little harder to obtain but I recommend taking screenshots of the chats and meetings. Don’t be afraid to ask other chapter members to send you photos of themselves participating in your club’s activities!

Events and Activities: Hold fun social events, especially for Roman holidays! Whenever a Roman holiday comes around, TJ Latin usually has a fun activity to attend. For example, in February, we had a Lupercalia event where we played a fun mafia-style game and learned more about the Roman holiday.
