Parliamentarian corner
Hi I am Kashi Nikore, your VJCL Parliamentarian. I am super excited to have my own page in this edition of the forum. As you may know, the elections for the offices of VJCL Editor and Historian will take place at the NJCL Convention this summer. I am looking for applicants to pre-file by June 1. I decided to ask our current Editor and Historian some questions, so you can learn about the positions.
1) What is something about your position that no one told/warned you about?
2) What is the best part of your position?
3) What is your advice for the next VJCL Editor/Historian ?
4) Anything else you would like to enlighten the Forum readers about your position?
There are currently 2 amendments that are being voted on! Now I know this probably sounds super boring, but I promise they are SUPER important for all VJCL'ers. The 1st one is an addendum to an amendment, and is super simple. Basically, you need to live in Virginia and/or go to school in Virginia to be in the VJCL. No one on the board really knows why this wasn't in the Constitution before, but you can thank Mr. Redpath for noticing this. And the 2nd amendment is also an addendum. This one basically makes it easier for sponsors because instead of sending VJCL dues and Convention fees separately, they are both due at the same time. Now I know this wasn't very specific, but ALL the information you could possibly want is in the ballot. The link to has been sent to all sponsors, and also posted on the homepage of virginiajcl.org. However, you may notice that it requires a password to continue. That password has been sent to all chapters and members-at-large that are in good standing. If you have any questions or comments, please feel free to contact me at [email protected] and PLEASE REMEMBER TO VOTE BY JUNE 30TH.
VJCL Historian, Merritt Schwartz-
1) I didn’t realize the amount of running around I would have to do. I remember, at state convention, I had to take pictures at 4 different events within 1 hour. Plus it was hard to balance quantity and quality for the pictures.
2) Being able to capture all the moments that make the VJCL great. It’s super stereotypical but it’s the truth.
3) Wear comfortable shoes. I wore Adidas sneakers to state convention, and even though I looked stupid, the comfort was worth it.
4) Obviously have fun, but also make sure you take pictures of everyone- not just your friends.
VJCL Editor, Sayeed Akhtar-
1) Nobody warned me about enforcing deadlines, both for people contributing to the Forum and myself.
2) Getting to look back through everything and see the JCL through a different lens. It helped me realize the scope of the organization.
3) Get help. It’s your job to edit the content, not create it. You are not in this alone. Start as early as possible, the second you get elected.
4) You (all VJCL’ers) can always contribute content. Don’t be scared to send in your ideas- that’s something I did a bad job of communicating and I feel should be emphasized in the future.
