The second part of this project`s appeal is Trel`s ability to deliver catchy and well sung hooks. Many artists in the Drill Music genre have heavy assistance from auto tune to simulate accurate singing, but Trel manages to hit notes with startling accuracy. (Such as the chorus to his song Rich as F***) This can elevate an otherwise unnoteworthy verse to new heights, and have listeners rewinding tracks just to hear the hooks themselves.
Content-wise the project falters a bit. Though I love hip hop, I will admit when it comes to the commercial aspect of it, the music tends to lean heavily on certain topics and in this regard Trel doesn`t manage to stray far from his comfort zone. If you`re looking for an apologetic look at some of the decisions he`s made, don`t expect any of that here. Given the epidemic of violence going on in Chicago, it would`ve been refreshing to hear depictions of the consequences of some of the decisions made by Trel on this project, but on this tape he keeps it about as pure “drill” as you can get. In that respect, you have to tip your hat to Trel. He`s managed to create a new body of work, dealing with the same topics found in his genre, but in a way that displays his own unique talents in the process. Fans of conscious music from Chiraq will have to look to Lupe and Common for their insightful and thought provoking messages, but if you`re looking for an unapologetic tour through Chicago`s rough side Gleesh may be exactly what you need.
