Children ' s liquid medicines are often the first culprit. Cough syrups, liquid paracetamol, and antihistamines are almost universally sweetened because an unsweetened liquid medicine that a sick child refuses to take helps no one.
But that sugar, pooled around teeth during frequent dosing, creates exactly the acid environment that drives decay. Children who are unwell also brush less thoroughly, compounding the risk.
Sugary Syrups Rinse with water after every dose. Choose sugar-free formulations where available. Ask your pharmacist.
Vitamin C Supplements If your child takes or if your GP has recommended, then consider using a dissolvable Vitamin C with a straw.
Antibiotics Tetracycline antibiotics can permanently stain forming teeth. Children under 8 are rarely prescribed them for this reason. If concerned, check with your doctor.
Asthma inhalers also deserve a special mention. Inhaled corticosteroids reduce saliva flow and can leave a residue in the mouth that promotes oral thrush and decay. Always rinse the mouth thoroughly with water after using a puffer— a simple step that significantly reduces the risk.
