Stop moaning, you voted for it.

I'm going to try to explain a little bit about politics to you, dear reader. Now I know you have the right to vote once every 5 years for someone who will supposedly represent you, your views and your interests, in our most “respected” of institutions, the House of Commons, but I'm asking you, just this once, to abstain.

No, I'm not about to advocate the end of democracy, or to insist that we can all live in an anarchistic absence of the State ruled by warlords and bandits, but I'm asking you to take a good, long, hard look at what “representative democracy” in the United Kingdom actually looks like in the 21st Century.

Apart from the hilarious pantomime of men in tights chasing those who refuse to take their hats off in the Royal Palace of Westminster (yes, it's true, the Metropolitan Police actually have no powers there, that's up to the Sergeant of Arms) and the ridiculous sight of grown men guarding little pots of snuff in the Commons (yes, also true), do we really need to be represented by anyone other than ourselves?

We suffer under a “first past the post” system of faux democracy allowing a near monopoly of two parties to dominate the legislature. With Party apparatchiks chosen via various dubious methods and sponsorship, either from industry or unions, to claim a mandate to quite literally rule over you, and every aspect of your miserable existence, simply because more people voted for them than anyone else. Naturally, this ends up in a situation where 70% of the population can vote against a party yet they'll happily win and smugly claim a right to govern and extract as much of your hard earned cash as they see fit in taxes, safe in the knowledge that they have a near dictatorship for the next 5 years.

Smaller parties (yes, including all you rabid 'UKIPpers') are stuck in an electoral wasteland, despite having secured perhaps millions of votes, whilst the two main parties can ignore any dissent and blindly implement whatever policies their external paymasters have demanded. As ever we end up with either a corrupt corporate state or one run for the benefit of Union paymasters. We refuse to acknowledge that any vote that didn't win a seat is nothing more than wasted.

Winner takes all, and all is so very, very much – it's every single thing you do, eat, say, earn and think – all waiting to be regulated, rationed, taxed, licensed, monitored or measured by the ever growing State behemoth at Westminster.

We could introduce proportional representation (50% of the votes meaning 50% of the seats in Parliament for example) and submit ourselves to perpetual coalition Government as smaller parties ally and compromise themselves to form voting blocks or, better still, we could take a long hard look at where democracy should be headed in this age of transparency and inter connectivity – Direct Democracy.

The Swiss have long held the view that power ultimately belongs to the people it is inflicted upon and yes, if you can get enough support, it's referendum after referendum to decide what the Government does on your behalf. The result is that the Swiss are the richest, healthiest, most democratic, most educated, most peaceful and lowest taxed people on the planet. No one can name their Prime Minister and the role of the vanity politician is extinct. If you have a problem, you can go and shout at your local mayor or raise a petition for a referendum yourself. Hence there are no minarets in Switzerland and no sneers from politicians at the “stupid electorate” for daring to go off message.

So until we see truly representative democracy in this shitty, corrupt little nation of ours, I won't be giving 650 idiots in Parliament any kind of mandate by voting for any of them at all. It won't stop them, of course, but as the East German Government found out, eventually no mandate means no real power once the people of a nation have decided their Government is no longer relevant.

At the very least, you can proudly hold your head high and state loudly, “I didn't vote for any of this shit, I'll have no part of it”. Reclaim your right to be a free thinking individual by refusing to hand over power to anyone else to abuse on your behalf. Liberate yourself and those around you by having nothing to do with the corrupt and self interested hypocritical sycophants currently posing as your “elected representative” in The Palace of Westmonster. It's the 21st Century for Christ's sake.
