Tschabalala Self : By My Self

In her much-anticipated BMA exhibition , figurative painter Tschabalala Self unveils a suite of paintings in response to Henri Matisse ’ s sculpture Two Women — a piece that was originally titled Two Negresses . Self uses recycled materials in the new works to create a critical juxtaposition with Matisse ’ s sculpture while celebrating the beauty of multi-dimensional Black figures . The exhibition is rounded out by other recent paintings and sculptures by Self .
