Monument City Originally a member of the Peabody Heights Brewing co-op, Monument City has since launched in its own location in Highlandtown—a former warehouse loaded with industrial charm complete with exposed iron beams, enormous windows, and original green pendant lighting. And then there’s the beer: This 20-barrel brewery serves up eight brews on tap, including its signature 51 Rye IPA, a German-Czech pilsner and a malty American Brown Ale alongside seasonal offerings that include such brews as fruity gose styles and dry-hopped pale ales. Don’t miss the unique bar and tap handles, handmade by a local woodworker from reclaimed wood that was originally used to make mash tanks in a Baltimore distillery in 1910. Peabody Heights Brewery A unique co-op setting that allows fledgling brewers to craft their beers under the guidance of a master brewer, Peabody Heights Brewery was the launchpad for many of Baltimore’s current independent breweries, including Monument City Brewing and Full Tilt. The location now brews more than 2,000 barrels a month in its space in Waverly. The tap room, located in a space that was once the site of Old Oriole Park in the early 1900s, offers tastings of the brewery’s signature, seasonal and limitededition brews. One to try: the brew inspired by the Inner Harbor’s Mr. Trash Wheel. Union Craft Brewery HOP T IT The Baltimore region has many more breweries in the city and beyond. Here are a few more to put on your BEER BUCKET LIST. Suspended Brewing Co. WHERE: Pigtown TRY: The latest creation— it’s always changing! Waverly Brewing Co. WHERE: Hampden/ Woodberry TRY: One of the creative limited-edition concoctions— past brews have included such whimsical ideas as the nitro Down for the Count Chocolate Stout, which involved brewing Count Chocula cereal in mash, and a stout collaboration with the Local Oyster, brewed with Maryland oysters. Full Tilt Brewing WHERE: Govans TRY: A brew from the Govans Gose series, or a seasonal hazy IPA from the Hops the Cat series. Nepenthe WHERE: Hampden TRY: A juicy sour from the Polydribbles series, or a single hop pale ale from the Tiny Tyrant series. B.C. Brewery WHERE: Hunt Valley TRY: One of the 24 self-serve beers on tap. DuClaw WHERE: Rosedale TRY: Sweet Baby Jesus Peanut Butter Chocolate Porter Flying Dog WHERE: Frederick TRY: The seasonal Dead Rise Old Bay Summer Ale, brewed with local staple Old Bay seasoning and lemon. Guinness Open Gate Brewery WHERE: Halethorpe TRY: Skip the brand’s ubiquitous Irish stout and instead sip one of the experimental beers brewed on-site in Maryland—the first Guinness brewery opened in the U.S. in more than 60 years. ■ Set along the Jones Fall river in historic Woodberry, Union Craft Brewing combines old traditions with new ideas to create its modern riffs on beer. Founded in 2012, the 20-barrel brewhouse moved to a new, larger space as the anchor to Union Collective in 2018, where they host tastings alongside food vendors like Well Crafted Kitchen, The Charmery and Vent Coffee Roasters. Head to the tap room to try some of the brewery’s ever-changing creations, which include collaborations with Baltimorebased brands, locally influenced flavors and beer-adjacent offerings like cider. One recent iteration: A rich porter inspired by local brand Michele’s Granola, which was brewed with almonds and vanilla to take on the tastes of the brand’s original recipe. ■
