JASON VARNEY Whitehall Food Market NEIGHBORHOOD: Woodberry ESTABLISHED: 2020 THE BACKSTORY: Back in the 1700s, the fast flow of the Jones Falls river was used to power Baltimore’s flour mills. Whitehall Mill was one such mill, owned by the same family that settled nearby Ellicott City. A half-century later, in 1839, the flour mill was converted into a textile mill that made cotton duck canvas for ship sails. After decades of reuse in other manufacturing industries, including paper goods and men’s grooming products, the mill was recently redeveloped as a mixed-use project that includes the new Whitehall Food Market, which sprawls over 18,000 square feet of market and private event space. THE VENDOR MIX: Whitehall scored some hot culinary partners including True Chesapeake Oyster Co., Ceremony Coffee Roasters and Crust by Mack, a local smallbatch bakery that specializes in craveworthy hand pies. New concepts include Heritage, from former Ouzo Bay chef Rey Eugenio, and Homebody General Store, focused on handmade home decor and gifts curated by a local ceramicist. ■ FARMERS MARKETS Can’t get enough markets?
