Extreme Golfing
There ’ s a reason locals and visitors alike consider Sea Mountain Golf Course one of the most challenging courses they ’ ve ever played .
“ THE GOLF COURSE IS SMALL , but it ’ s very tough – there are no recovery shots ,” says Karl Stedman , treasurer of the Sitka Golf Association , which manages the course .
“ Because the course is carved out of the mountainside , it ’ s narrow and has several blind spots . Three out of nine holes are fairly flat , but for all the others , you ’ re going uphill or downhill .”
As for the visiting golfers , Karl says , “ People who golf down south love it . They say it ’ s tough , it ’ s unique , and it ’ s totally different from what they ’ ve played before .”
Beyond the challenge , part of what makes this course so unforgettable is its breathtaking , panoramic views of Sitka Sound . The best place to enjoy them ? Probably Hole 5 , which Karl calls “ absolutely spectacular .”
The golf course has other perks . For example , all green fees include access to a golf cart , and out-of-town guests can take advantage of special packages , which include a pickup and drop-off shuttle , nine-hole game , cart rental , club rental , 10 golf balls , and a bottle of water .
