CYCLE SITKA
Your Guide to Pedaling Smart
The familiar whir of air through your bike spokes is a sound many of us remember from childhood, and there’ s no better way to relive it than by biking in Sitka. As Alaska’ s first bike-friendly community, Sitka offers a network of paths and trails for every kind of rider.
HOW TO PREPARE
It’ s important to know your abilities and check the Biking Map to match your skill level with the right paths. Some are suited for all riders, while others may challenge even the most experienced cyclists. The Biking Map is available online at visitsitka. org, and printed copies are free to pick up at Visit Sitka’ s Visitor Information Center and biking operators around town.
For multi-day stays, consider using biking as a convenient transportation option. Sitka’ s three local bike rentals— Kings e-Bike Rentals, Tide Rips Adventures, and Yellow Jersey Cycle Shop— offer a range of rentals, making it easy to explore the island on two wheels.
The bears in Sitka are present year-round and enjoy the same wilderness that bikers do. If you find yourself faceto-face with a bear, remember to keep a safe distance, make noise to alert the bear of your presence, and last but not least, do not run!
Whether you’ re a seasoned cyclist or just looking for a leisurely ride, here are a few key tips to keep in mind as you take in the sights:
• All paths and trails that are open to bikes are also open to people walking and / or vehicular traffic. Be courteous of those around you when sharing the trails.
• The rules of the road in Sitka apply to bikers too. Use designated bike lanes, be cautious of people walking, and yield to traffic- it’ s the law!
• In areas with heavy foot traffic, walking your bike is a considerate practice. Keep in mind that riding your bike on downtown sidewalks is prohibited.
• Wearing appropriate gear, including a helmet, is essential. Stay aware of your surroundings and always use clear hand signals.
