ALASKA PURE SEA SALT
Salt by the Sea
Jim and Darcy Michener , owners of Alaska Pure Sea Salt Co ., first discovered their passion for salt during their honeymoon to a remote cabin in Southeast Alaska . After having left a pan of seawater on the wood stove overnight , the couple found salt forming .
What started out as intrigue later formed into a salt obsession . The couple learned how to create flawless pyramidal flakes and have perfected the craft of making their artisanal salts locally without additives or chemicals .
After several years and exponential growth , the company still only sources from the Sitka Sound , and this seawater gives their salt that extra oomph . Jim describes the original flake salt as “ the cornerstone ; it ’ s a must-have .” His favorite infused flavor is the Sitka Spruce Tip Salt . From the ocean waters to the locally-sourced spruce tip , this infusion is made start to finish within only 1 square mile . Darcy has a favorite too – the versatile Vanilla Bean Salt . This gourmet salt elevates any dessert , but it also creates amazing flavor when added to fall favorites , such as roasted carrots and acorn squash , or when sprinkled over seared scallops .
The salts have become so popular over the last 5 years that restaurants from Seattle to New York City are using their product . You can also taste their salts in local establishments , such as Ludvig ’ s , WildFlour Café & Bakery , Dove Island Lodge , and Talon Lodge , and on top of Sweet Sisters Caramels treats . This hard-earned popularity has allowed Alaska Pure Sea Salt Co . to open a new storefront , with long shelves housing jars of sea salt , gift boxes , bath salts , and fair-trade chocolate bars .
The new space also gives them enough room to offer specialty food items . Imported Japanese soy sauce , balsamic vinegar , French and Italian cheeses , and more give locals and visitors the chance to cook with rare fine foods . Another bonus ? The store offers a colder Alaskan treat : Wild Scoops ice cream from Anchorage . And in the summer months , this dessert goes fast .
