FATE ACCOMPLI CURATING FATE
In downtown Sitka , just a short walk from the popular landmark St . Michael ’ s Russian Orthodox Church , sits Fate Accompli .
The art gallery is owned by husband-and-wife duo , Ken and Rachel Fate , and their four-legged family member , Olivia , a “ Bethel Special ” whose unique regional breed is made up of 17 types of dogs . Potted plants decorate the entrance , their pops of color and sweet fragrances inviting those passing by to come inside . Olivia , the gallery ’ s official greeter and the Fates ’ muse , diligently welcomes each guest . Her easy-going nature goes hand in hand with the warm , comfortable atmosphere the Fates have worked hard to curate .
While the gallery is still young , having opened in December of 2021 , Ken and Rachel have been active members of the Sitka community for more than 30 years , Olivia joining them for the last nine . Art has always been a part of their lives , but it was a conversation between the couple a few years ago that encouraged them to change careers and open their own gallery . “ We wanted to make it a priority to work together and with Olivia , and we wanted to do that in a way that shared artwork because we felt like the best way to interact with the world was to share beautiful things ,” says Ken . From there , dreams of their gallery were born . Soon after , they came up with a name , a play on words of the French saying , fait accompli , which means to consider it done . “ Our last name is Fate , so we turned that phrase around and put our own spin on it ,” says Ken . “ To us , Fate Accompli means , ‘ Go get the fate you want . Don ’ t just sit back and let fate happen to you .’ That ’ s what we ’ re doing . We ’ re trying to make our lives the best way we could envision them .”
