Food Truck Fare

In the summertime , Lincoln Street and nearby streets turn into a mobile food market , in the form of tents , trucks , and carts . Here , a food lover ’ s taste buds are met with dynamic flavors and fresh ingredients . Blackened salmon taco bowls , lingcod sandwiches , and salmon bisque are just a few fan favorites that have people talking about Sitka ’ s food trucks from coast to coast .
SUMMER FOOD TRUCKS
One food truck that ’ s lived up to its name is The Fresh Fish , whose chef and owner , Barbara Palacios , puts her own spin on global dishes with local seafood . Customers can use crispy tortilla chips to scoop up a bite of halibut ceviche and then warm their stomachs with a bowl of rockfish tom kha . Or try one of Barbara ’ s favorites , the sockeye salmon poke bowl . “ I am a huge fan of sockeye . Its bright red color and firm flesh make for the best poke .” says Barbara . Locally-caught salmon also shines on this menu in the smoked salmon nachos , and The Fresh Fish offers daily specials to feed the community . “ I love feeding people . The smile that comes to one ’ s face when they taste something so delicious , or the bite that takes them back to their childhood … I love that feeling . It ’ s why I do what I do ,” she says .
Since Sitka ’ s waters are teeming with salmon , it ’ s no surprise this versatile fish is highlighted in many other local eateries . Ashmo ’ s , located in the heart of downtown Sitka , along Lincoln Street , is known for their wild Alaskan fish dishes . Right next door , the Sitka Salmon Wagon , uses locally caught salmon in its savory bisque , a perfect pairing to Sitka ’ s year-round rainy weather and moody skies .
