Dancing Through Sitka ’ s Past and Present

Ever wondered what it would be like to get an up-close look into the cultures that influence Sitka ? Our dance groups offer just that .
The newest ensemble on the island , Alaska Storytellers , takes viewers on a journey through Sitka ’ s Russian-influenced history , dating back to the 1700s and up through 1945 . The 30-minute “ Tale of the Russian Saga ” features battle scenes , humor , art , and conflict resolution as the performers dance their way through parts of Sitka ’ s past .
For over 50 years , the New Archangel Dancers have used folk dance , song , and authentic costuming to give viewers an inside look at Alaska ’ s Russian history and culture . Their 30-minute performances cycle through over 35 different cultural dances , allowing showgoers to experience something new time and time again . This dance troupe has performed in several countries , including Japan , Russia , and Mexico .
To be immersed in Sitka ’ s rich-living Tlingít culture , vistiors can view the Naa Kahidi Dancers , a multigenerational group of Native performers who range in age from 8 months to 80-years-old . Performances are held in a traditional style Tlingít clan house . The deep bass of the box drum , handsewn regalia , and the warm smell of a small cedar fire help bring their 30-minute performances to life . The unique songs and dances have been passed down from many generations , giving the audience a view into the past and present of this beautiful culture .
Don ’ t forget to stick around after any of these unique performances for meet-and-greets and photos with the dancers . All of Sitka ’ s dance groups perform throughout the summer months , at special community events such as the Alaska Day Festival , and for private groups .
