NOVEMBER , 2022 | WHALEFEST

A Celebration of Marine Life

Each year , the first week of November marks one of Sitka ’ s most beloved and talked about events — WhaleFest .
During the spring , humpback whales migrate to Sitka Sound for a feast of calorie-rich herring , and visitors come to Sitka throughout the year to catch a glimpse of these massive mammals and their fellow ocean creatures . Alongside the humpback whales , Steller sea lions , orcas , seals , and bald eagles all navigate their way through the ocean waters , looking to share in their portion of the feast . Come the end of fall , the whales get ready to head to Hawaii to mate and birth their calves , but not before Sitka has a chance to give them a proper send-off .
Sitka WhaleFest is a festival to celebrate marine life through science education , community , and storytelling .
This multiday festival consists of wildlife cruises , a film festival , music , local eats , an artisan market , a fun walk or run , and a symposium , where renowned scientists from all over speak on their current marine-related research and findings .
The best part of all ? You don ’ t have to be a scientist to attend . WhaleFest was designed to bring all types together with the common goal of educating , engaging , and bringing awareness to these fascinating creatures and their environment . Pack a jacket and rain boots , and don ’ t miss out on your chance to learn from the experts while participating in these one-of-a-kind festivities .
