GETTING AROUND

Sitka on Two Wheels

While Sitka is often praised for its walkability , visitors can also make their way around the island on bikes .
Yellow Jersey Cycle Shop offers bike rentals from as few as 2 hours and up to 1 full week . The store offers traditional bikes , electric bikes , and even electric scooters . With many frame sizes to choose from , guests are sure to be matched with a bike that will make their ride comfortable and enjoyable . The Alaska Marine Highway accommodates bikes onboard so travelers can ride their bikes around in other local communities . The Ride , Sitka ’ s public transportation system , also offers bike racks on all of their buses to help riders move around the community more easily .
As a bike-friendly town , Sitka has paths and trails fit for all levels of riders , allowing visitors to experience Sitka at their own pace . Perfect for families , bikers can follow the seven-mile , paved bike path along Sawmill Creek Road .
The trail begins just blocks from downtown at the Sitka Cemetery and stretches along the ocean , where bikers can take in views of whales and snow-capped mountains . Those looking for a more intimate experience with nature will enjoy the Single Track Bike Trail , which takes riders through ancient trees on a one-way loop . Constructed entirely by volunteers , this bike-only path is intended for a variety of levels , though riders should note some of the tight turns and steep hills are thrill-inducing .
Additionally , the gravel road up Harbor Mountain is ideal for those wanting a challenge with a big reward . Just under six miles one way , this steep incline will have bikers working up a sweat as they reach the perfect place to eat lunch and soak in the Alaskan wilderness .
Safety First When biking around town , please honor signs that ask bike riders to walk their bikes in areas , such as the Sitka National Historical Park and Starrigavan Estuary Trail .
