Baltimore’ s creative community is putting the city on the map as an incubator for experimentation, innovation and freedom of expression. The founder of one of Baltimore’ s leading art journals explains why.

B A L T I M O R E, S art scene is exploding with talent and Cara Ober knows where to find it. Ober is not only a talented artist in her own right, but she is the voice of Baltimore’ s creative community as the editor of BmoreArt, a carefully curated folio of arts events, artist profiles and commentary. We asked to hear more about how she’ s working to give Baltimore’ s art scene the attention it deserves.

WHY did you launch BmoreArt?

I finished an MFA in painting at MICA in 2005 and I was seeing all these great gallery shows in Baltimore, but finding that most people I talked to didn’ t even know about them! So I created an online space for people to be able to better participate in person. BmoreArt started informally in 2007 as a collaborative, artistrun blog and it featured events that I thought were worth going to, exhibitions to check out, and critical conversations and reviews by myself and others.
In the BmoreArt magazine, especially our print journals, our team thoughtfully curates different artists, writers, stories and photos in order to reflect as diverse a selection of the very best art as we can. We strive to reflect Baltimore’ s amazing diversity
