Baltimore ’ s biomedical educational system drew Dr . Vinod Jaskula-Ranga here as a student at Johns Hopkins — then , after founding his biotechnology company Hunterian Medicine , he left town for Boston . But when it came time to launch a laboratory setting , Baltimore was a natural choice for its cutting-edge robotics and innovative software capabilities .
On Baltimore ’ s offerings :
From my perspective as the CEO , Baltimore is where the talent is . Living in Baltimore , I had frequent interactions with cutting-edge science occurring at the University of Maryland or the Carnegie Institute just a few miles away . The high density of biomedical talent in the city is unique .
The proximity to other biomedical institutions is a strong factor in recruiting and retention . That means there is easy access to the National Institutes of Health ( NIH ) or the United States Patent and Trademark Office ( USPTO ), or any number of worldrenowned biomedical institutions . The BioHealth Capital Region ( Maryland , Virginia and Washington , D . C .) was recently ranked # 1 in the country for science and engineering talent .

Baltimore also has a thriving nonprofit community that some people might not fully appreciate . I ’ ve always believed in working with patient communities and disease foundations . I am excited about a recently formed partnership to develop therapeutics for muscular dystrophy with the Strongest Hearts Foundation , a local nonprofit . This came out of a chance connection that was made in the city — it is the type of serendipity that comes from being in Baltimore .

We ’ ve been lucky to experience the vibrant startup community . There ’ s a special comradery that exists among the startups and it ’ s a vital component to success . There is also something intangible — but immediately recognizable — to those who know the city . People are genuinely interested in supporting others , and barriers that exist in other places do not exist in Baltimore .
