Preventing Waste and Making an Impact in Baltimore

At the end of every trade show at the Baltimore Convention Center ( BCC ), exhibitors break down booths and box up wares . But a lot gets left behind — chairs , shelving units , hardware and more .

The BCC has found an innovative way to put those abandoned goods to use , right here in Baltimore . Diversion by Donation is part of the BCC ’ s everevolving corporate social responsibility strategy .

Despite the pandemic , the BCC was able to divert waste by 42 % in 2020 and 26 % in 2021 . While supporting the city and transitioning into a field hospital , the Center delivered a total of 5.5 tons of prepackaged meals to local nonprofits in 2020 . In addition , it partnered with the Maryland Food Bank and was the first user of MealConnect , an app designed to easily connect donors with recipients .

In January of 2022 , the Center hosted the 52nd Annual Mid-Atlantic Nursery Tradeshow ( MANTS ), which partnered with the BCC to achieve a diversion rate of 77.27 % that included over 64.5 tons of materials either recycled or donated to local nonprofits . Donations included 699 pounds of edible food through the MealConnect app , and 377 plants , 146 shrubs and more than 155 trees found homes with the Baltimore Tree Trust and Midtown Baltimore . Other items such as wood , metal , pallets and cardboard were able to be recycled .
