Open since 1782 , Baltimore ’ s Lexington Market has the distinction of being the oldest continuously operating public market in the nation . And just recently , it underwent a massive renovation to bring the space into the modern era while preserving its historic legacy — and acknowledging the wishes of its loyal local fanbase . The project ’ s leadership made it a point to involve community voices , ensuring the plan was approved by “ everyone from the City of Baltimore to the State of Maryland to committed customers and citizens ,” according to its website . The finalized project includes building a new market structure that takes inspiration from historic market formats , plus demolishing the former arcade structure and replacing it with a walkable , outdoor plaza suited for farmers ’ markets and other community events . The new building includes space for more than 45 new vendors , so there ’ s even more delicious fresh foods to taste and try , alongside tried-and-true favorites like Faidley ’ s Seafood and Krause ’ s Lite Fare .
