Fairy Tales in Education: A Gateway to Holistic Learning by Grațiela Vișan
Project overview The eTwinning project Fairy Tales: the Key to Learning and Development explores the integration of fairy tales into the school curriculum as a means of fostering emotional, cognitive, and cultural growth in students. Fairy tales offer unique opportunities for imaginative thinking, ethical reflection, and intercultural understanding. By engaging with stories from different cultures, children learn to appreciate diversity and develop empathy.
Fairy tales are deeply embedded in a child’ s developmental journey. From infancy to adolescence, they shape perceptions and provide symbolic frameworks for understanding the world. Children often interpret fiction as reality, transferring fairy tale elements into their
everyday surroundings. This project leverages that natural inclination to support learning across disciplines.
Curriculum integration The project connects fairy tales with multiple subjects, encouraging the development of 21st-century skills such as creativity, collaboration, digital literacy, and critical thinking.
Language and Literature Students engage in reading comprehension through classic and modern fairy tales. They write original stories or alternative endings, expand their vocabulary using descriptive and figurative language, and practice oral communication through storytelling and dramatization.
Social studies and citizenship education Fairy tales serve as a lens for exploring moral values and ethical choices. Students compare stories from different cultures and examine their historical origins, fostering cultural awareness and civic understanding.
Art and music Visual arts activities include illustrating scenes and characters. Students stage short theatrical performances and compose simple melodies or soundscapes to accompany stories, enhancing their creative expression.
Science and nature Environmental themes such as enchanted forests and magical animals are explored through scientific inquiry. STEAM activities
