Learning from One Another: eTwinning as a Community of Practice by Rosa Luísa Gaspar and highlights how it contributes to a more collaborative, innovative, and inclusive school environment.
What is eTwinning for teachers?
Launched in 2005 by the European Commission, eTwinning is an initiative within the Erasmus + programme that promotes cross-border collaboration between schools using digital technology.
In an era where educational challenges are increasingly global and interconnected, it is essential for teachers to move beyond working in isolation. eTwinning, as part of the Erasmus + programme, offers a concrete response to this need by providing a collaborative network for teachers and students across Europe – all without leaving their own schools.
More than just a project-based platform, eTwinning has become a space for continuous professional development, a community of practice where educators learn through doing, sharing, and reflecting( Wenger, 1998). This article explores the value of eTwinning in supporting teacher professional growth
Through the platform, schools work together on joint pedagogical projects in diverse areas such as culture, sustainability, citizenship, languages, and inclusion( European Schoolnet, 2022).
For teachers, eTwinning offers:
• a network of professional contacts across Europe;
• a secure digital space( TwinSpace) for pupil collaboration;
• access to free professional development, including MOOCs, webinars, and learning events;
• forums for sharing, co-creating, and reflecting on teaching practice.
Thus, eTwinning serves as a space for pedagogical innovation, a meeting point for peers, and a source of recognition for teachers’ efforts( National Support Service eTwinning Portugal, 2021).
