Socio-Emotional Education and STEAM Integration by Florina Popescu

“ Balancing Emotions: An ' Inside Out ' Journey through Math and STEAM” was an innovative and engaging project designed for preschoolers which ran from October 2024 to May-June 2025.
The project encouraged teamwork, empathy and respect, both in the classrooms and between the teachers involved. Mathematics was integrated into the project to show children how it connects to real-life situations, helping them see mathematics as a valuable tool for problem solving and informed decision-making. Through Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics( STEAM), preschoolers were involved in using creative and critical thinking, conducting experiments, representing a chance to explore the world around them. The proposed activities were designed to be engaging and meaningful, making learning enjoyable, while integrating emotions, mathematics and STEAM concepts.
The project aimed to help preschoolers explore and manage the emotions of joy, sadness, anger, surprise, fear and love through STEAM( Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics) activities. The children tried to understand, recognize and manage their own emotions through Leo, a little lion who has a special ability to understand and balance emotions, as well as solve mathematical problems.
The project was divided into 6 sections and in each section the working team had to edit Leo ' s story and the challenge mission, STEAM activities, collaboration activities, coding activity, homework and online games. Each month, Leo asked the children for help to advise his friends and teach them little secrets to manage and balance their emotions. Leo ' s " answers " contributed to the identification of
