Code Week Every Week, Code Week for Future – Coding as a Teaching Method in Early Childhood Education by Nicoletta Huștiuc and Maria Tsolaki
In the context of rapid transformations in education and the increasing emphasis on developing 21st-century skills, computational thinking and digital competences have become essential elements from the earliest years of life. Early childhood education does not aim only at transmitting knowledge, but also at forming children who are able to think logically, solve problems, collaborate, and find creative solutions in new situations.
eTwinning projects provide an ideal framework for developing these competences through international collaboration, the exchange of best practices, and the use of modern teaching methods. One such project is“ Code Week Every Week, Code Week for Future”, which promotes the integration of coding activities into the educational process throughout the entire school year, demonstrating that programming and algorithmic thinking can become accessible teaching tools even for preschool children.
In the current school year, Vinerea Kindergarten with Extended Program and 9th Kindergarten of Naoussa, Greece actively participated in this European project together with partners from several countries, aiming to develop children’ s digital skills, logical thinking, and creativity through coding activities adapted to their developmental level.
The project set the following important educational objectives: developing computational thinking from early childhood education; integrating coding activities into the daily kindergarten routine; stimulating creativity and problem-solving through play; developing spatial orientation and logical thinking; using interactive and collaborative learning methods; actively involving parents in educational activities; promoting international collaboration through the eTwinning platform; exchanging experiences and best practices among partner teachers.
Throughout the school year, preschool children from the mixed group“ Albinuțele / Bee group” participated monthly in unplugged coding activities, adapted to their age and organized in a playful and engaging manner.
In parallel with classroom activities, children and teachers also participated in joint project activities together with European partners, both during the Europe Code Week and throughout the school year, through challenges and collaborative tasks organized approximately every two weeks.
