greet you with a heavy heart this year , because this was not the aQuellé Midmar Mile that I was aiming to welcome you all to . In my 30 years of organising this event , there has never been a challenge that we couldn ’ t overcome , but 2021 unfortunately presented us with just that .
My team and I have worked for months to put on this event – in fact , we have worked harder than ever before – and we were fully committed to making the 48 th edition the best it could be . Sadly , circumstances beyond our control put paid to those plans , but we move on , thankful for an alternative and able to find new ways to make Midmar Mile 2021 unique .
To all the people behind the scenes , I am thankful for your support , your guidance and your willingness to work harder and longer as we worked to host a massparticipation event in circumstances none of us have ever faced before . We have an amazing team , too many to name here , and we would not have the world ’ s largest open water swim without you .

Your commitment to the aQuellé Midmar Mile goes a long way to making this event what it is , year after year , and we are proud to be walking this path with you to our 50th . Message from the Race Director , Wayne Riddin
insert in this digimag looks back at our 12 years together , and what a 12 years it has been ! I look forward to sharing many more Midmar moments with you .
I also want to voice my appreciation for 30 South , who came to us with a concept we had never even considered before , and turned it into something we know we will be incredibly proud of . The Virtual aQuellé Midmar Mile would not be possible without you . You were faced with the challenge of launching the virtual swim a week earlier than planned and we appreciate the long hours you have worked to get us here .
To all our other sponsors , this race is dependent on each one of you . Whether big or small , each of you is a vital puzzle piece in making our event work . Thank you for making sure our puzzle is complete , year on year . We have created a page further on where all swimmers can see the massive amount of commitment it takes to put this event together .
I must also add that when we announced the cancellation to all our sponsors , each one met us with understanding and a willingness to help , and we are grateful to be backed by such an amazing team .
Our key service providers at the event must also be thanked here . Many had made costly arrangements to be at the dam , and like us , were devastated at the late cancellation of the event . The reaction was one of help and support , and we are incredibly grateful .
Last but not least I want to thank you , the swimmer . This event would be nothing without you , and while I am sorry we cannot offer you the swim you were expecting , I am grateful to see the outpouring of support many of you have shown . I have committed much of my life to swimming , and feel I still have some years to go , and thus I am working to make sure that the road to our 50 th edition is going to be something truly special !
