The 2021 Virginia Tech College of Engineering Dean ’ s Awards for Excellence recognized six exemplary faculty from the department . These awards shine a light on the exceptional work of faculty which has directly or indirectly impacted the success of Virginia Tech students .
Associate Professor and John R . Jones III Faculty Fellow Jonathan Boreyko was awarded for Excellence in Teaching .
George R . Goodson Professor Ranga Pitchumani was awarded for Excellence in Research .
Professor and Nuclear Engineering Program Director Alireza Haghighat was awarded for Excellence in Outreach .
Associate Professor and John R . Jones III Faculty Fellow Pablo Tarazaga was named a faculty fellow .
Assistant Professor Pinar Acar was named an Outstanding New Assistant Professor .
Assistant Professor Oumar Barry was also named an Outstanding New Assistant Professor .

Abdulsalam I . Shakhatreh , a graduate student advised by Assistant Professor Juliana Pacheco Duarte , is the recipient of the Decommissioning & Environmental Sciences Division ( DESD ) Graduate Scholarship from the American Nuclear Society ( ANS ).
The scholarship is awarded to a candidate who best demonstrates an optimal combination of high standards in the areas of academic , leadership and personal values and who also assert a stated interest in the professional arena represented by the DESD charter .
“ Abdulsalam is an outstanding student in our NE Program ,” said Duarte . “ The ANS Scholarship is a recognition of his work and important research .”
