L oudoun Golf & Country Club in Purcellville is an ardent supporter of the VSGA . The association was delighted to return to this outstanding club for the Super Senior Stroke Play Championship in July . The tournament crowns champions in three age divisions , and you can read about the winners in this issue of Virginia Golfer .
Opened in 1927 — originally as a 9-hole course — Loudoun Golf & Country Cub was spearheaded by Clarence and Gertrude Robey , prominent members of the local community who , along with 40 other founding members , were the driving force to launch LG & CC . The club — which is the home course of Logan Reilly , the 2024 VSGA Amateur and State Open of Virginia champion — expanded to 18 holes in the early 1960s and has played a major role in the sports , recreational , and social fabric of western Loudoun County for nearly a century .
As part of its Strategic Plan , the VSGA recently inaugurated a Military Initiatives program to support our active and retired military personnel . Glenn McCloskey — the head golf professional at Loudoun and winner of the prestigious Middle Atlantic PGA President ’ s Award — together with his fervently patriotic club members , have been passionate supporters of the Folds of Honor Foundation , having raised approximately $ 200,000 for this wonderful program since its inception in 2007 . If you would like to learn about the VSGA ’ s Military Initiatives program including how you can support our heroes in uniform and to also learn about golfing opportunities to assist our veterans and their families , please visit vsga . org / military .
Built over the beautiful , rolling terrain of northern Virginia on property that contains seven natural springs that feed numerous water hazards on many holes , Loudoun Golf & Country Club is a classic “ old school ” type of course that is truly fun to play . While not overly long at just under 6,700 yards from the tips , LG & CC demands the golfer fully control her / his ball , miss their shots in the

proper place , and manage their game wisely to score well on this charming design .
Loudoun Golf & Country Club is well known for its particularly outstanding set of par 3s , and one of the best of these short holes is the dramatic , downhill 10th . Played through a chute of trees to a deep , relatively narrow green that is beautifully framed by massive hardwoods , the putting surface contains a variety of subtle ridges and slopes that often make green reading , putting , and recovering for par from a missed green in regulation a bigger challenge than it first appears .
Players will often err to the right on their tee shot as the sharp slope on that side can sometimes create a favorable bounce toward the green . However , playing downhill from the rough from this very steep bank to a fast green that is well below you requires a particularly deft touch . Any shot missed left from the tee is especially dangerous , as huge bordering trees and two flanking bunkers guard the left side of the green . Should the player ’ s ball somehow avoid the bunkers , it is almost certain to run down into the lovely , rocky stream just beyond the sand . The 10th is a superb hole where par is always a welcome score .
A six-time VSGA Player of the Year , David Partridge was elected to the Virginia Golf Hall of Fame in 2020 . He lives in the Richmond area and works as a mortgage banker serving clients throughout Virginia .
