A Word About the Interns … by CHRIS LANG

Jack Bain ( James Madison University ), Hayden Cekander ( University of Illinois ), Emily Erickson ( University of Lynchburg ) and Ben Walls ( Virginia Tech ) each brought unique qualities to the VSGA , and we were thankful for their hard work throughout the summer .
FUN FACT : FIVE MEMBERS OF THE VIRGINIA STATE GOLF ASSOCIATION PROFESSIONAL STAFF GOT THEIR STARTS AS USGA P . J . BOATWRIGHT INTERNS at the VSGA : Josh Coates , Courtney Hamlett , Kent Holubar , Matt Smiley and Michael Walder . Countless other past VSGA interns have gone on to do great things in the golf industry , from professionals like Olivia Bowling and Gavin Parker to Brittany Woo , a past VSGA-VIP scholarship recipient who is featured in this issue and now plies her trade at The First Tee of Greater Richmond .
Long story short — a P . J . Boatwright internship is an incredible foot in the door for those wanting to get into the golf industry . And we ’ ll let you in on a little secret here : We couldn ’ t do what we do at the VSGA in the summer without those quality interns .
This past summer , four interns put in tremendous work to help the VSGA continue its mission of serving golf in Virginia .
If you ’ re a championship player , you probably saw Hayden and Jack working registration and scoring at events . After a round , you may have talked to Ben , who added excellent value to the VSGA ’ s photo and social media efforts . And you may have run into Emily either at a championship or at your club as she toured the state to ensure the VSGA maintains a face-to-face relationship with all our member clubs .
If you or someone you know has an interest in getting into the golf industry , a Boatwright internship is an excellent place to start . Look for information on how to apply for next summer ’ s internships later this year at VSGA . org . A couple of items to clean up from the last issue . Corrections :
• In David Partridge ' s Great Holes story on Meadowbrook Country Club , a error was regrettably edited into the copy ( points finger at self ...). It was Meadowbrook ' s John Rollins who earned three PGA Tour wins and collected over $ 18M in career earnings , not Bobby Wadkins .
• In the story on short par 4s in Virginia , it was Will Holmes who scored the holein-one on the 10th hole at Winchester Country Club , not Rob Holmes .
As always , my email inbox is open for suggestions . Thanks for reading !
