Aeropines has two 18-hole courses, the
Hornet, an open, links-style course with a lot
of water, and the Tomcat, a tougher and tighter
layout routed through thick hardwoods. The
club also boasts a state-of-the-art indoor
practice facility that opened in 2010. In
addition to two high-bay doors that open to
the expansive driving range with five target
greens, the facility has an indoor putting green
and exercise room. There’s also an excellent
short-game practice area with two putting
greens, two bunkers, and a chipping green.
design with cleaner lines, but each club has
27 holes called, appropriately enough, the
Red, White, and Blue nines.

Though not long at 6,265 yards from
the tips, this tree-lined layout plays a lot
tougher than that because of the wind
off the Chesapeake Bay and the water
that comes into play on 14 holes. “It’s not
just driver, wedge, putter,” says head pro
Bill Baldwin. “You’ll clean all 14 clubs
when you’re done.” The undulating greens
require a good amount of local knowledge,
but anyone can enjoy the stunning
bay views.

Located just a few miles from D.C., the
Arlington course sits on a high ground that
once was the site of Fort Richardson, which
protected the capital from Confederate
forces. Only remnants of the fort remain
today, flanking the ninth green of the Red
nine. Opened in 1927, the course is a real
throwback design with shaggy bunkers and
small, pushup greens. A new 90,000-squarefoot clubhouse has really enhanced the club.
The Fairfax course is a more open, modern
