Courses for Forces Aeropines has two 18-hole courses, the Hornet, an open, links-style course with a lot of water, and the Tomcat, a tougher and tighter layout routed through thick hardwoods. The club also boasts a state-of-the-art indoor practice facility that opened in 2010. In addition to two high-bay doors that open to the expansive driving range with five target greens, the facility has an indoor putting green and exercise room. There’s also an excellent short-game practice area with two putting greens, two bunkers, and a chipping green. design with cleaner lines, but each club has 27 holes called, appropriately enough, the Red, White, and Blue nines. EAGLE HAVEN GOLF COURSE Base/Location: Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek, Virginia Beach Play Policy: Open to public with sponsor to get on base Green Fees: $ Though not long at 6,265 yards from the tips, this tree-lined layout plays a lot tougher than that because of the wind off the Chesapeake Bay and the water that comes into play on 14 holes. “It’s not just driver, wedge, putter,” says head pro Bill Baldwin. “You’ll clean all 14 clubs when you’re done.” The undulating greens require a good amount of local knowledge, but anyone can enjoy the stunning bay views. ARMY NAVY COUNTRY CLUB Base/Location: Arlington and Fairfax Play Policy: Private, must play with member Green Fees: Initiation fee determined by military rank Located just a few miles from D.C., the Arlington course sits on a high ground that once was the site of Fort Richardson, which protected the capital from Confederate forces. Only remnants of the fort remain today, flanking the ninth green of the Red nine. Opened in 1927, the course is a real throwback design with shaggy bunkers and small, pushup greens. A new 90,000-squarefoot clubhouse has really enhanced the club.
