blew past the field to register a
record-setting 10-stroke victory at this
summer’s State Open of Virginia. He
became the first professional to win
back-to-back Open titles since the
Virginia State Golf Association and
Middle Atlantic Section of the PGA
of America merged separate Opens in
1985 and is the second Virginian to win
back-to-back VSGA Amateurs (2002-03)
and back-to-back State Opens (2012-13).
Chandler Harper won Amateur titles in
1933-34 and State Open crowns in 194041 and again in 1967-68.

ON CHOOSING GOLF OVER
FOOTBALL AS A PREP AT
POWHATAN HIGH SCHOOL: I thought
the possibility of pursuing a golf career
after college was more reasonable than
football. I knew I wanted to have the
opportunity to play a professional sport,
and the opportunity was greater with golf
than it was with football. And concussions
are a lot less likely in golf.
