VSGA Summer Rewind continued

at Winchester Country Club. Austin shot a three-day 218 and posted a five-shot victory over Amanda Hollandsworth( Great Oaks CC) to win the 39th VSGA Women’ s Stroke Play Championship. On the same course, Cabriele shot a two-day 158 and claimed the 19th VSGA Senior Women’ s Stroke Play title, her second straight win in the event. … Glenmore CC ' s Andrea Miller and Cindy Thompson teamed to shoot 73 and win the 1st VSGA Women’ s Four-Ball Championship at Fredericksburg CC in June. Natalie Easterly( CC of Virginia) and Amy Ellertson( Farmington CC) shot 67 for a two-stroke win in the senior division. … The Carolinas team posted an 84-60 victory in the 60th Women’ s Virginias-Carolinas team matches, held at River Landing in Wallace, N. C.

64th VSGA Junior Stroke Play Championship
The Federal Club, Glen Allen, July 26-28 Kurtis Grant( Army Navy CC) birdied three of his final five holes to surge past 36-hole leader Dylan Taylor( The Dominion Club) and claim his second VSGA championship since November 2015, when he won the 1st VSGA Junior Golf Circuit title. Grant shot a final-round 69 for a three-day 212. While some players shy away from looking at leaderboards during rounds, Grant wanted to know exactly where he stood, and inquired
on how Taylor was playing as he walked to the 16th green.“ Having your fate resting in your hands, that’ s why I play golf,” he said.“ Just the thrill, how fun it is, the tension. I love it.”
Quick facts: Field and format: Fifty-four holes of stroke play. Eighty-four players who either qualified or were exempt. Field cut to low 45 and ties after 36 holes. First-round leader: Grant( 69) Second-round leader: Dylan Taylor and Hunter Duncan( 141) It was over when: Grant sank a 30-foot birdie putt from the fringe for birdie on the 54th hole and Taylor missed his birdie putt from a similar distance and lie. 47th VSGA Junior Girls’ Championship
Evergreen CC, Haymarket, July 6-7 Victoria Tip-Aucha( VSGA Junior Golf Circuit) moved from Virginia to Thailand when her father took a job in the Asian nation, but the 14-year-old returned stateside this summer to stay with family in northern Virginia and play in VSGA events. She entered the second round seven shots behind 18-hole leader Diana Domenech( VSGA Junior Golf Circuit) but caught fire on the second day, posting a course record( red tees) 67 to force a playoff. Tip-Aucha made birdie to win on the first playoff hole.

Quick facts: Field and format: Thirty-six players entered, 36 holes of stroke play. First-round leader: Diana Domenech( 71) It was over when: Tip-Aucha reached the green in two on the par-5 18th, the first playoff hole, setting up a two-putt birdie. 26th Junior Match Play Championship
Indian Creek Yacht & CC, Kilmarnock, June 21-24 Eleven days shy of his 19th birthday, Ty Olinger( Blacksburg CC) defeated Carter Morgan( Hobbs Hole GC) 3 and 2 to win his first VSGA championship in his last tournament as a junior. Olinger survived a playoff just to make match play, then rattled off four wins in two days to win the title. Both players are college bound, Olinger to West Virginia and Morgan to Virginia Wesleyan College.
Quick facts: Field and format: Two days of stroke-play qualifying, with the top 16 advancing to match play. Stroke-play medalist: Brandon Weaver( 141) It was over when: Olinger’ s greenside bunker shot on No. 16 in the title match settled two feet from the cup, securing the match-winning par.
Quotable:“ This is the biggest win, honestly, ever in my whole career. I couldn’ t ask for more than to end my junior golf career like this.”— Olinger
Tap-ins Charlie Kennedy( VSGA Junior Golf Circuit) shot a two-day 139 to win the boys 12-13 division at the 10th VSGA Youth Championship, held at Elizabeth Manor G & CC in Portsmouth. … The Carolinas squad beat the Virginia / Maryland team 6½-5½ to win the 15th Mid-Atlantic Girls Challenge at Williamsburg Golf Club. … Maryland topped the VSGA team 22-14 to win the 18th Virginia-Maryland Junior Girls’ Matches at Lodestone GC in Maryland. … The Carolinas defeated the Virginias 8½-7½ in the 34th Virginias-Carolinas Junior Boys Matches at River Landing Golf Club in Wallace, N. C., to reclaim the Vinny Giles Trophy.
SENIOR ROUNDUP
Mike Krulich( Blacksburg CC) teamed with Pete DeTemple( Old Hickory GC) to win the VSGA Senior Four-Ball title in May. A month later, Krulich defeated DeTemple on the first playoff hole to win the 31st VSGA Senior Stroke Play Championship at the CC of Petersburg. … Tom Grady( Shenandoah Valley GC, 65-69 age group), Jim Hudson( Salisbury CC, 70-74) and Walt Martin( Army Navy CC, 75-plus) won their respective age groups at the 22nd VSGA Super Senior Amateur Championship, held at Spring Creek GC in Zion Crossroads. … George Kapetanakis( Trump National GC) won the 1st VSGA Mid- Senior Amateur, for players aged 60-64, at Spring Creek.
