Two courses headed towards insolvency have been revived , thanks to financial contributions from Hampton Roads businessman Dwight Schaubach

Just about everything Dwight Schaubach has touched in more than a half-century as an uncompromising businessman — from garbage hauling to private security to antique car collecting — has turned golden . His two venerable golf courses in Hampton Roads are exceptions . They ’ ve turned a rich , emerald green .
Schaubach , 79 , is the money , clout and prestige behind the salvation of Williamsburg Golf Club — formerly
Williamsburg Country Club — a decade ago and , in 2020 , Elizabeth Manor Country Club in Portsmouth , home of the Eastern Amateur tournament . The failing private clubs , owned then by their membership , were plummeting toward insolvency before Schaubach bought them and launched a loyal band of operatives into action .
Amid the 2009 recession , Schaubach nonetheless was persuaded to pour some $ 6 million into a vast , difficult rebuild of the Williamsburg club ’ s then-51-year-old
