We got to hole No. 14, playing 180 yards with a front-hole location.
Front or back didn’t really matter, as the green is shallow
but wide.
I pulled out my Callaway Hawkeye 7-wood, which my wife had
abandoned about a year ago—it’s a perfect club for 180 yards.
My Titleist ProV1 (#2 red) was launched high … with about a
5-yard draw. I kept my eyes on the ball as it went towards the
flag. I couldn’t quite make out how it came down, but my wife’s
reaction told me everything. She turned around and said “It went
in the hole!” She said the ball never bounced on the green. It was
a slam dunk—“nothing but net.” Very unusual because all holes
were shallowed out with a “COVID-19” gadget so that golfers do
not have to reach in to retrieve balls. I can only guess that the
ball was a perfect size to squeeze through, between the flag and
side lining of the hole.
IT’S A WINNER! (OR NOT?)

First ace: Mount Vernon CC, No. 6
I had been playing golf since I was a kid (circa 1962) and never
had a hole in one. On Sept. 26, 2003, I was playing with the head
pro, the general manager, and the head superintendent at my
club, Mount Vernon CC. The 6th hole at Mount Vernon (it was
the old version as we have redone it recently) is a par 3, about
150 yards with a pond and surrounded by bunkers. I used my
9-wood which was my favorite club and hit a pretty good shot. As
it was approaching the hole, my head pro, Pete Van Pelt said, “It’s
going in.” I, of course, didn’t believe him until I saw the assistant
greens superintendent, who was blowing off leaves on the green,
raise up his hands, signaling a “touchdown” or a hole in one. Once
we realized that it actually went in, Pete said, “You know, the tee
sheet is full.” Being a rookie with holes in one, I didn’t grasp the
meaning until he explained the drinking portion of the whole
ritual. By the time I made the turn, my HIO allowance was gone.
Consequently, I left the tab open until I completed my round and
for several hours after. My bar bill was more than my monthly
mortgage payment at that time, but it was totally worth it!

First ace: Twin Lakes GC, No. 14
Finally, after 38 years of playing ….
I played a round with my wife at Twin Lakes – Lakes Course
in Centreville, and, three other couples chickened out based on
high likelihood of thunderstorms in the afternoon.
On Apr. 26, 2007, I was invited to play in the Jack Pellock Epilepsy
Charity Tournament at Salisbury Country Club. On the
182-yard 2nd hole on the Buckingham Course, the three other
members of my team had hit their balls and no one was on the
green. All I was trying to do was get on the green and give us a
putt for par. I hit my 4-hybrid and the ball went up in the air and
hit the green and rolled in! The witnesses immediately started
walking to the green so we knew something was up.
The really good thing is that this was the “car hole!” It was a
red 2006 Chrysler Crossfire convertible donated by Whitten
Brothers Chrysler-Jeep.
