A look back at the highlights. 8 DELTA DENTAL STATE OPEN OF VIRGINIA BALLYHACK GOLF CLUB | JULY 18-20 The worst part of the 2018 Delta Dental State Open of Virginia for Jack Mon- tague: Not being there. “In 2017, I ended up shooting 75 in my last round, and I was 11th low amateur, so I wasn’t exempt the next year,” he said. “Went back to qualifying and missed it by a shot. Not playing this last year, it definitely moti- vated me to get back here and play well.” Montague—who qualified easily this year by shooting 66 at The Dominion Club— won’t have to worry about going through qualifying again for the next decade, thanks to his stirring win in a playoff in July at Ballyhack Golf Club. Five shots back of the V I R G I N I A G O L F E R | S E P T E M B E R / O C T O B E R 2 0 19 lead entering the final round, Montague fired a final-round 66 to catch the leaders and force a playoff with longtime friend and five-time VSGA champion Mark Lawrence Jr. He tapped in for par on the 18th hole and watched as Lawrence missed his long par putt, sealing his victory. Montague, a sophomore at the Univer- sity of Virginia, became the first amateur since Roger Newsom in 2011 to win the Farmington Cup. “You couldn’t have scripted it any bet- ter, it’s awesome,” he said.
