A FAREWELL Bittersweet ending leaves locals disappointed, but hopeful for a comeback N ot long ago, PGA Tour golf in the D.C. area was almost assumed. A tournament had been held here in all but two years since 1980, and the greatest player of this generation was host of the newest iteration. 18 My, how things can change in the blink of an eye. The summer kicked off with the Quick- en Loans National at TPC Potomac at Avenel Farm in Bethesda, Md. It might be the last regular PGA Tour event in the Washington area for some time—if not ever. With no event scheduled in the V I R G I N I A G O L F E R | S E P T E M B E R / O C T O B E R 2 0 18 foreseeable future, this one sure went out with a bang. The biggest storyline was, of course, Tiger Woods’ return to his own event, and the crowds followed in droves despite temperatures that peaked at well over 90 degrees each day.
