Springfield Golf & Country Club ’ s Larkin Gross played an integral role as the United States defeated Great Britain & Ireland 15½-10½ to win the PGA Cup in September in Surrey , England . The Surrey Cup is like the Ryder Cup , except it features club professionals rather than touring professionals . The U . S . won for the first time overseas since 2009 . The event began in 1973 , and this victory was the 19th in the series for the U . S .
Gross , who played in the 2021 PGA Championship , went 3-1-1 during the weekend . He was part of two different winning four-ball sides and was part of a winning side in a foursomes ( alternate shot ) match . His only loss came in a second foursomes match . He tied his singles match .

COMMUNITY ON THE COURSE The First Tee of Hampton Roads is unique in that it features an all-female leadership team — Golf Membership and Programs Coordinator Jenna Schmidt and Director of Golf Operations Morgan Miner .
One of the organization ’ s specialties is working to increase access to golf for young people of diverse cognitive and physical abilities by partnering with the Special Olympics to host multiple adaptive events and provide members of the adaptive community with access to chapter facilities free of charge .
Recognizing the important role The First Tee plays in the Hampton Roads community , the USGA chose the chapter as one of 25 to receive IDEA grants in 2022 .

The USGA ’ s IDEA Grant Program delivers direct funding to community-based programs that break down barriers to participation in golf . The First Tee fits that profile with its character-building programs and its drive to improve pathways to inclusion , diversity , equity , and accessibility . The USGA awarded grants of up to $ 25,000 to selected chapters , including The First Tee of Hampton Roads , to provide transportation , hire diverse coaches , train volunteers , and build programs in diverse communities , among other activities .
