succeed.
“A friend of mine told me two years ago
when I first reached the [PGA] T that ‘all
our
my chips fell in the right place, the stars were
aligned, and that God had a hand in it,’ ”
Hurley says. “But when I went to the
Web.com Tour, he said all my chips were
still in the right place, the stars were still
aligned and that God still had a hand in
that, too, because there was a purpose for
everything.”
That’s the credo Hurley, an immensely
spiritual person, lives by.

His backstory is much of the reason why he is
resolute, why he is in lockstep with the minigoals in order to reach the larger ones. There
aren’t many in his line of work; well, not

The affable Hurley, 31, remembers
following his father, who by happenstance
played golf collegiately, to the range and
hitting balls as early as 2 or 3 years old. Golf
and baseball were Hurley’s passions while
growing up in Leesburg, Va.
At some point in the eighth grade, though,
he apparently told his mother that he had an
epiphany: he wanted to attend the United
States Naval Academy. Or so she tells him
these days, as he says with a laugh. He
honestly doesn’t recall the seminal moment.
While at the Naval Academy, he excelled
in his studies, earning a degree in quantitative
economics, and in golf. As an All-America
player, he won six collegiate events alone in
2004 and was awarded the Byron Nelson
Award for being the top college golfer and
sportsman.
“I learned how to practice effectively in a
short amount of time and get something out
of it,” Hurley says of his play as a collegian.
“If you practice three hours or more, that’s
a long time.”
His routine was the same each day. Hurley
would wake up before 6 a.m., go to class,
