Notes and anecdotes from the end of the VSGA championship season
MEN ’ S EVENTS
45th VSGA MID-AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP Winner : Evan Beck ( 65-68-67 — 200 ) The story : Beck capped a historic year with a playoff win over Garland Green at Fawn Lake Country Club , becoming the first player since Tom McKnight in 1985 to win the Mid-Amateur and State Open of Virginia in the same year . Beck and Green engaged in a four-hole playoff , and it became clear that only a mistake would separate the two as they repeatedly played Fawn Lake ’ s par-4 18th . On the fourth playoff hole , Green hit his drive left and out of bounds , giving Beck the opening he needed to win with a par . Beck and Garland tied the tournament scoring record , set by Matt Chandler in 2012 , and became the only two players in event history to play all three rounds in the 60s .

74th VSGA SENIOR AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP Winner : Buck Brittain ( def . Steve Serrao , 1 up ) The story : Brittain became the first back-to-back winner of the Senior Amateur since Keith Decker in 2013-14 by topping Serrao , the 2019 champion , in a tense final match at Birdwood Golf at Boar ’ s Head Resort . Brittain sank a long birdie putt on the par-4 16th to take the lead for good and held on for the victory by making par to tie each of the last two holes . Brittain ’ s biggest scares came in the early rounds . He squandered a 4-up lead at the turn before defeating Jack Allara in 20 holes in the round of 32 . In the next round , he needed a strong up-and-down from the bunker on the 20th hole to eliminate Robert Nussey in fading daylight .
