Guy credits the GHS for keeping him connected with “ like-minded ” enthusiasts of the game ’ s history and tries to participate in regional society events .
Johns appreciates being able to learn new things about old equipment from fellow collectors . He recently played in one of GHS ’ s hickory-shaft tournaments in Maryland , dressing in period costume — complete with knickers and a necktie .
“ It ’ s a great community of people who truly know the history of golf and can help you find your way through the maze ,” said Johns , who has also shared his knowledge with golf newcomers for the last nine years in the Links to Freedom program serving soldiers and their families .
And whether they are excited about old artifacts or recovered history , the two men agree they are hopelessly addicted to the love of golf they can share with countless other kindred spirits around the globe .
