Colonial Hills Golf Club in Forest will celebrate its 60th year of operation in 2022 . Forest , where Thomas Jefferson built and maintained his summer home — Poplar Forest — is located about 10 miles southwest of Lynchburg , and Colonial Hills has been faithfully serving Lynchburg area golfers since 1962 . Nestled in the southern foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains and providing breathtaking views of the Peaks of Otter , Colonial Hills features beautifully wooded , rolling terrain , and water comes into play on a number of holes . A par-71 course that plays nearly 6,400 yards from the tips , Colonial Hills allows players of all skill levels a delightful venue for a most enjoyable round of golf .
One of the finest holes at Colonial Hills Golf Club is the demanding par-3 , 14th , that plays 206 yards from the championship tee . Attractively framed by trees , including a strategic copse of hardwoods that closes in from the right , the 14th plays downhill across a scenic pond to a small

circular green . While golfers often favor the right side to take advantage of the natural topography , balls that stray too far to the right will sometimes ricochet off the trees into the water .
With a putting surface of only 4,850 square feet that plays effectively even smaller , the 14th demands a superb long iron or hybrid approach to reach and hold the green . Hitting the green in regulation will likely result in a good birdie opportunity , however , missing the putting surface from any direction creates a potentially difficult recovery . The 14th is a truly demanding hole where par is always an excellent score .
